SALANAARS

SALANAARS

The Roots of the Orcish Fury

The Salanaar were the hegemonic tribe in the first "greenskin" wars. In one way or another they managed to defeat or subdue the other tribes that inhabited the lands of the orcs either by force, ingenuity or, mainly, by magic.

The Salanaar had a special bond with their Guardian. They studied it with great respect and quickly learned to communicate with it and draw on its magical power much better than any of the other tribes. To the Salanaar their Guardian was literally that, a Guardian they respected, but did not fear as a god as other factions did. This allowed them to advance faster in knowledge, but, at the same time, slowed down their development in other facets.

The Salanaar drew everything from magic, using it to improve crops, as medicine, to build their cities, and even for entertainment. This caused them to care little for technological advances or for the mechanical devices that other races had developed. They didn't really need it, their mastery of magic rivaled that of the elves themselves, and their strong, powerful bodies found it easier to channel power than to do manual labor. This is why when "The Day of Sin" arrived, the Salanaar found themselves in a very delicate situation.

After the shock and the realization that the Guardians lost their power when one moved a certain distance away (or rather when they got closer to another Guardian), the Salanaar found themselves confined to their own territory. In the borderlands, where the flow of their Guardian's magic weakened, the Salanaar found themselves unable to maintain their settlements due to their heavy reliance on magic. Harvests were no longer as bountiful and construction accidents were more common, making it impossible to maintain many of the architectural wonders of some cities.

The border was depopulated and the few orcs that remained in those places were forced to adopt the technology and customs of humans. But not all the orcs who left the border towns and cities returned to the interior of the kingdom. Many orcs went to study at the universities and guilds of their human neighbors, learning blacksmithing and adopting many of their customs, some even dared to use magic other than their Guardian's. This type of orcs were called "Nestah" which can be translated from the orcish language as "pioneer", but which is sometimes used colloquially as "outcast".

This is how, over time, the borders of the orc kingdom were filled with these Nestah, who even managed to expand them thanks to the advantage provided by their new technologies in conjunction with their prodigious physique. The Nestah soon earned a reputation as fierce, nearly invincible warriors in the borderlands, where magic was always weaker for any race
